Sometimes the internet makes your life suck. And I'll tell you why. Recently, I purchased the internet for my new apartment. (Clearwire, it's pretty rad, and pretty cheap. If you get it, tell them my name and I get $60. Rad.) Ever since I purchased the internet, it has consumed my life. In some ways, it is good. It has allowed me to keep tabs on my bank account online, it has allowed me to download a lot of tunes, it has allowed me to get smart (random wikipedia articles, good late night activity), it has allowed me to catch up on Project Runway, and I'm sure it has allowed me to do many other exciting things. But sometimes, it just takes over my life. I am much less productive when I have the internet. My sink is filled with dishes, my couch is piled with clothes and papers, my kitchen has an opened box of cereal sitting in the middle of the table, two feet away from the cupboard. Lame.
The other day, something sad and incredible happened. The internet broke. Stacy was over for dinner. After we finished eating, we sat down at the kitchen table, her on one side, me on the other - both with our laptops. We nerded out on the internet for a long time not even speaking to each other, and then it happened. The internet broke. We didn't know what to do. I sat and tried to fix the internet, running back and forth from the kitchen and living room, unplugging wires and plugging wires and restarting my computer. Stacy pulled out an Ikea catalog and starting cutting hearts from every page. By the time I had given up, Stacy had a giant pile of paper hearts in front of her.
After a short discussion about what to do with the hearts, we headed out my door and taped a paper heart on the door of all 30 units in my building. (more like 26 or 27, because we almost got caught and ran back upstairs before finishing.) We took the remaining hearts and scattered some of them all over the floor at a friends mini party, and later that night we left the rest on our table at the cha cha. This is why the internet sucks. Because when it breaks - you have to get creative. And it ends up being RAD.
